Dwight Carter > L&N's General Electric 70-tonner number 98 rolls across the trestle over Old 31-E north of Petroleum, Ky with the local freight on the Scottsville Branch of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. The train is running toward Scottsville, Ky. Alas, in 1976 most of the line was abandoned and the rails were removed. The unique GE engine was sold to Tropicana for switching orange juice cars in New Jersey. Photo from Dwight Carter. links http://www.tn52.com/the_littlest_tunnel.htm
Dwight Carter > This old 19th century locomotive #661 travels from Gallatin to Scottsville during the early 1900's and would stop here as you see and take on water. The old watermaker is still standing today. Our home where I grew up is just across to the left at about 100 yards. I have yet to find what happen to the old locomotive.
Dwight Carter > This my great, great, great,Uncle Henry Bud Huntsman. Private Company C 9th Regiment Kentucky Infantry.

During the Civil War the county, though divided in loyalties within itself, became a part of the Confederate movement.

Feb. 15, 1862, the State Senate by a 23-0 vote expelled Sen. WILLIAM T. ANTHONY of Allen County because he was engaged in the rebellion and Dr. JOHN M. JOHNSON because he held a position in the rebel army.
July 29, 1862, Gen. John Hunt Morgan's Confederate Calvary, spearheading the second invasion of Kentucky, crossed from Tennessee into Allen County.

Dec. 27, 1863, Col. Hughes Hamilton, Doughertys guerrillas captured Scottsville after defeating and taking prisoner Capt. J. D. Gillum's Company of the 52nd Kentucky Regiment.

A few days later Union forces followed guerrillas into Tennessee killing 40, taking 20 prisoners, and recovering most of the Scottsville plunder.
